For more on rhetorical situations and rhetoricians who have analyzed them, see Grant-Davie, “Rhetorical Situations and Their Constituents,” Rhetoric Review, 15.2 (Spring 1997): 264-279.
A rhetorical situation arises whenever a rhetor (either a speaker or a writer) sees a need to communicate with an audience in order to accomplish a goal. The rhetorical situation is the set of related factors whose interaction creates and influences a discourse—which may take the form of a speech or a piece of writing. The rhetorical situation is the environment in which the discourse will exist and operate.

    Portfolio Checklist
You'll want to make sure that these elements are all included in your final portfolio. Lack of any one element may result in anything from a half grade reduction to failure of the portfolio assignment.
Title Page--This should include your name, a portfolio title, and the semester (Fall 2009) at the very least. Any additional information is at your discretion.
Table of Contents--Should contain titles and page numbers for all of your papers as well as page numbers for your revision memos.
    Unit 1 Revision Memo
    Unit 1 Paper
    Unit 2 Revision Memo
    Unit 2 Paper
    Unit 3 Revision Memo
    Unit 3 Paper
    Unit 4 Revision Memo
    Unit 4 Paper
    (optional) Appendixes or additional material
CD or USB Drive--This should contain digital copies of your paper and revision memos. Some of you have digital unit 4 papers so this is necessary. All others should consider it an exercise in smart information management

    Friday 11/23
    Roll Call
    Peer Review:
Exchange your paper/project with someone in class.
Carefully evaluate your partner's paper/project and answer the following questions. If you are unable to answer these questions suggest possible improvements:
Who is the intended audience? Is it implied or directly stated? How are the interests and concerns of this audience met?
Is the paper/project engaging and informative? Do you feel captivated and interested in continuing?
What are the genre and medium? Is the paper/project consistent with the conventions you are familiar with?
Is the exigency of your classmate clear? Does the writing style and approach to the subject seem filled with purpose?
After you have written down your responses to these questions discuss the paper/project with your partner. This will give you the opportunity to express any additional concern or praise and give you both the chance to ask questions of each other. If you finish before time is up, review a new paper/project, but you only need to respond verbally, no need to write down your response.
