In the YouTube video “Jimmy Carr owns heckler”, Jimmy Carr takes on a humorous audience member and uses his own joke against him. When the member of the audience heckles Carr about his mother, Carr turns the joke around and makes it about the other man’s mother. When the audience member says that Carr’s mother calls him asking for sex, Carr responds by stating that his mother is dead, and it’s okay because the audience member’s mother warned Carr that he would be in the audience. When Carr is describing what happened with the other man’s mother, his body language shows that it was relating to sex and then proceeds to say that there was more than one person there. This banter between the two men is humorous to the audience because it is facetious as well as fictitious, and everyone can relate to it as though it were their mother.
The rhetor audience relationship presented in the video "Jimmy Carr owns heckler" is actually quite complex. It seems that the heckler, who is a member of the audience is displeased with Jimmy's ability to make them laugh so he takes it upon himself to make the crowd laugh. In doing so he says "You mum has been calling me for sex." Of course referring to Jimmy's mother. Jimmy then proceeds to question the heckler's sexual orientation and his lack of distaste for necrophilia. He also insinuates that his mother is very sexually promiscuous and has poor manners in regards to speaking with her mouth full. By doing this Jimmy establishes his dominance over the heckler in order to remain an effective rhetor. The situation essentially embodies the phrase "you have to break some eggs to make an omelet." By potentially sacrificing his relationship with one member of the audience, the heckler, he is better able to establish his relationship with the rest of the audience.
The exigence of the comedy was the continuous attacking of one another with rude sexual references of the rhetor and the audience members' mothers. The Discourse is the vulgar use of language and communication. As directed by the rhetor, the sexual comments towards the audience members' mother is an example of crude humor which in most cases can be considered offensive. Throughout the discourse, the rhetor not only states obscene sexual jokes, but also rather demonstrates in a physical manner as well as in a verbal way. This use of communication makes the jokes he states more offensive because not only can it be heard, but also in a way, seen by the audience.
